LAMB & SYRAH TASTING – The third event in its Food & Wine Education series, The Makena Beach & Golf Resort is hosting a Lamb and Syrah (Shiraz) tasting. With the help of Master Sommelier Patrick Okubo, the event will focus on the dark-skinned variety grape that produces a powerful red wine. The full-bodied wine will be paired with Executive Chef Marc McDowell’s herb infused prepared lamb dishes. Guests can expect a menu that includes raised lamb, lamb meatballs and lamb skewers paired with Guigal Cote du Rhone, Penley Hyland Shiraz and Arrowwood Syrah by Sonoma wines. BLOOD DRIVE – Blood Bank of Hawaii is inviting locals and tourists alike to donate blood at one of its five drives this month. In Hawaii, only two percent of the eligible population donates blood. Typical uses for the donated blood include surgical procedures, treatment of accident victims, chemotherapy patients and mothers/newborns during delivery. The donation process usually takes about an hour and consists of a confidential interview, mini-physical then blood withdrawal. To donate blood you must be in good health, 18 yrs or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and bring a valid photo ID. IN THE FLESH – More than a year in the making, 97.3 K-ROCK, Maui Plumbing, Shaka Divers, Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse & BBQ, Java Cafe, Skyline Eco-Adventures, Epic Lighting and this paper are presenting “In the Flesh” featuring Murray Thorne. A solo two-night musical and visual experience, Thorne will perform music from Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Opening the evening will be Maui violinist Wenlu Duffy. HAWAIIAN MUSIC CONCERT – Roselani Place and Ola Na Mele Productions invite you to a “Picnic for Poki” at the Historic Ka’ahumanu Church in Wailuku Town. “Picnic for Poki” occurs every third Thursday and honors the late Allen “Baddah Poki” Pokipala, a Hawaiian music and culture advocate. FUNK DA END OF DA WORLD – This two-day festival pays homage to the end of the Mayan calendar and will include more than 15 bands and entertainers from Maui, California and beyond. A COMEDY STORY – Hawaii welcomes Paul Ogata, one of its own, for a new comedy tour. Orgata teams up with Andy Bumatai and Jose Dynamite. Ogata’s cleverness has won him an award at the 32nd Annual San Francisco International Comedy Competition and allowed him to headline shows nationwide and features on “Pacific Rim Comedy” and “Live at Gotham.” Entertaining Hawaii for over 30 years, the Andy Bumatai name speaks for itself.
