LAMB & SYRAH TASTING – The third event in its Food & Wine Education series, The Makena Beach & Golf Resort is hosting a Lamb and Syrah (Shiraz) tasting. With the help of Master Sommelier Patrick Okubo, the event will focus on the dark-skinned variety grape that produces a powerful red wine. The full-bodied wine will be paired with Executive Chef Marc McDowell’s herb infused prepared lamb dishes. Guests can expect a menu that includes raised lamb, lamb meatballs and lamb skewers paired with Guigal Cote du Rhone, Penley Hyland Shiraz and Arrowwood Syrah by Sonoma wines. BLOOD DRIVE – Blood Bank of Hawaii is inviting locals and tourists alike to donate blood at one of its five drives this month. In Hawaii, only two percent of the eligible population donates blood. Typical uses for the donated blood include surgical procedures, treatment of accident victims, chemotherapy patients and mothers/newborns during delivery. The donation process usually takes about an hour and consists of a confidential interview, mini-physical then blood withdrawal. To donate blood you must be in good health, 18 yrs or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and bring a valid photo ID. IN THE FLESH – More than a year in the making, 97.3 K-ROCK, Maui Plumbing, Shaka Divers, Fat Daddy’s Smokehouse & BBQ, Java Cafe, Skyline Eco-Adventures, Epic Lighting and this paper are presenting “In the Flesh” featuring Murray Thorne. A solo two-night musical and visual experience, Thorne will perform music from Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Opening the evening will be Maui violinist Wenlu Duffy. Get lost in a night that will transport you via synchronized lighting and interactive movie created by the artist himself into musical bliss. HAWAIIAN MUSIC CONCERT – Roselani Place and Ola Na Mele Productions invite you to a “Picnic for Poki” at the Historic Ka’ahumanu Church in Wailuku Town. “Picnic for Poki” occurs every third Thursday and honors the late Allen “Baddah Poki” Pokipala, a Hawaiian music and culture advocate. The afternoon will feature Na Leo Lani O Maui, a community choir under the direction of Gale Wisehart and Uluwehi Guerrero along with Halau Hula Kauluokala. FUNK DA END OF DA WORLD – This two-day festival pays homage to the end of the Mayan calendar and will include more than 15 bands and entertainers from Maui, California and beyond. Headlined by George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners and Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, other acts include DJ Logic, Monophonics, Big Sam, Jug Dealers, Afromassive, Brown Chicken Brown Cow, Kanekoa, Bruddah Waltah, Afrolicious, Free Radicals Projekt, MothXP, Ultra Violets, Flash Drive and the Kit Kat Club Cabaret. The sound waves of 60’s and 70’s funk, along with jazz and blues, will resound. $185 presale $200 at door. $400 VIP. Gates open 10am. Music Starts at 12pm. A COMEDY STORY – Hawaii welcomes Paul Ogata, one of its own, for a new comedy tour. Orgata teams up with Andy Bumatai and Jose Dynamite. Ogata’s cleverness has won him an award at the 32nd Annual San Francisco International Comedy Competition and allowed him to headline shows nationwide and features on “Pacific Rim Comedy” and “Live at Gotham.” Entertaining Hawaii for over 30 years, the Andy Bumatai name speaks for itself. MAKAWAO THIRD FRIDAY – “Makawao Gives” is the theme for this month’s Third Friday Town Party. In the spirit of the season, the evening is all about charitable giving. The evening will be filled with festive cheer while merchants participate in storefront/window dressing contest, Christmas carolers roam the streets and the air is filled the scent of holiday treats. If holiday stress is getting to you, enjoy a free massage at ON CORE Studio provided by Makawao School of Therapeutic Massage students. Also, there will be no road closure on Baldwin Avenue, so parking should be easier. FALCON’S NEST CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY MIXER – Falcon’s Nest Home Furnishings invites you to Falcon’s Nest Christmas Holiday Mixer. SANTA CLAUS COMES TO HULA GRILL – Yes, Saint Nicholas is setting sail for his 18th annual visit to Hula Grill Ka’anapali. Santa will merrily accept Christmas requests from keiki, take photos with families and pass out candy canes to those who made the cut for his nice list.
